Here is a series of questions to answer in your response, you can answer all if you like or just choose a few.
How is the Cyclops described?
How do Odysseus and his men take down the Cyclops?
How did Odysseus blind the Cyclops?
What is the Cyclops' name, and who is his father?
What did Odysseus and his men use to escape the Cyclops's den?
What have we learned that sheds some light on why Poseidon is making Odyssey's journey home so hard? (584-597)
Also, who do you think would be the best actor to portray Odysseus in the movie version of The Odyssey? Personally, I'm thinking Russell Crowe.
The Cyclops is described as an extremely large beast who is as strong as many men. Throughout the whole description, the Cyclops is portrayed as a massive brute. Odysseus and his men give the Cyclops wine until he collapses and then they stap his eye with a charred club. The Cyclops's name is Polyphemus and he claims that his father is Poseidon.Odysseus and his men escaped the cave by hiding underneath the sheep and rams that Polyphemus shepherded. We learn that Poseidon is mad at Odysseus because he blinded Poseidon's son and Polyphemus asked Poseidon to never let Odysseus reach home. As for an actor to play Odysseus, I'm going to have to vote for Matthew Mcconaughey because of his flowing golden locks.
ReplyDeleteThe Cyclopes' father is Poisidon. Odysseus and some of his crew are trapped inside the Cyclopes cave with all his cattle. To get out, Odysseus takes a long sharp stick and burns the end then plunges it into the Cyclopes eye. The Cyclopes has gone blind and is know not thinking right because Odysseus gave him much wine. Odysseus, smartly, tells the Cyclopes that his name is nobody, so when his Cyclope friends come to save him and ask him who did this to him, he says "nobody did this to me!". Then to escape the clutches of the angry Cyclopes, Odysseus and his men latch on the the bottom of the sheep and ride them outside the cave.
ReplyDeleteBy taking a long stick, sharpening the ends, and burning it, this is how they made the weapon that blinded the cyclops. They plunged it into his eye (in the very gory and descriptive scene about all the blood and stuff) in order to make an escape because the cyclops would never let them go out of kindness. I personally thought that Odysseus and his men used a very clever strategy for escaping the cyclops' den. They latched onto the bottom if his sheep so that when dawn broke and they would be let out, Odysseus and his men would be out too. I think they also had to do a lot of hard thinking because they could've easily sat on top of the sheep, but the cyclops petted them so it was very clever for them to go underneath. Since Poseidon is the cyclops' father and god of the sea, he would fulfill his son's prayer in a heartbeat. The cyclops wanted Odysseus' journey back home to be terrible and prayed to his father to make it that way. So, Poseidon is doing what his son asked of him and this is why Odysseus' journey back home is so hard. As a actor to play Odysseus, I think that Sean Maguire would be PERFECT for the roll after seeing him in Meet the Spartans.
ReplyDeleteTo start off, Odysseus is a smart man and he has a plan. I will explain what I mean later. The Cyclopes is described as huge and with one eye. The Cyclopse first seems like a nice guy but he turns out eating and munching on Odysseus's crew. He then takes Odysseus and his crew and traps them in his cave. He was about to stab him but he then realizes that if he does, Cyclopes could easily just move it and they will get stuck and they will die. So he has this plan as i was mentioning earlier and he gets his special wine and gets him drunk, then Cyclopes falls asleep and he stabs him in the eye.
ReplyDeleteOdysseus and his men use a clever plan to take down the Cyclops. They begin by preparing a charred stick to heat in the fire. Then Odysseus gives the Cyclops lots of wine so that he will fall asleep. Also, Odysseus cleverly says that his name is Nobody when the Cyclops asks. This becomes important later when the Cyclops is trying to get help but he doesn't know what Odysseus's name is. This also revels a little something about the Cyclops because he was dumb enough to believe Odysseus was named Nobody. Despite his lack of sense, he was very powerful in strength and size so it took some good ideas to escape from him. When the Cyclops fell asleep, Odysseus blinded him with the fiery hot charred stick. In the morning the next day, he and his men hid underneath the sheep so that when the Cyclops let them out they would be free. I was quite worried when the Cyclops stopped the sheep that Odysseus was under for a minute. I was sure that he was going to be found but I was relieved when Odysseus was finally free. The most surprising part about all of this was that once Odysseus had escaped, the Cyclops continued to retaliate. His father turned out to be Poseidon. This completely explains why Poseidon has always prevented Odysseus from returning home. He never let it go about what Odysseus did to his son the Cyclops.
